T-Mobile UK: "Mobile Broadband is not for watching videos or downloading files"

T-Mobile UK announced that although it "is the only operator to give customers the Mobile Internet for a fixed-price"  they will "From 1st February 2011 .. be aligning our fair use policies so our mobile internet service will have fair use of 500MB".

Previously T-mobile allowed (here - until they change this page) 1 to 10GB, depending on the price plan purchased.

See "Changes to Mobile Internet fair use policies" - here.

They advise subscribers that "our Mobile Broadband and internet on your phone service is best used for browsing which means looking at your favorite websites like Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, BBC News and more, checking your email and looking for information, but not watching videos or downloading files  .. If you want to download, stream and watch video clips, save that stuff for your home broadband".

The penalty for exceeding the fair use policy is (here) "..between 4pm and midnight you won't be able to do other heavy usage activities such as watching videos or downloading files. Before 4pm and after 12 midnight your Mobile Broadband service will continue to run as normal"

So far for mobile access as an alternative to DSL or Cable ...  since (here) "We want our customers to enjoy surfing the internet, and our Fair Use Policy is there to make sure our customers have the best experience possible. There might be some customers who use so much data that it affects the quality of everyone else's surfing. We also want to make sure everyone gets the same value from their chosen price plan".

  1. Dear Azi, congratulations for your blog, really interested indeed. I am presently working on a DPI study and I would like to know what is are the main interest in the fixed network as it seems P2P traffic is decreasing more and more and streaming is taking main part of the total BW. Are service providers deploying DPI for their fixed network or is a technology more "mobile oriented"?
Thanks a lot for your answer.
